The country will have to fight unitedly against hatred: Maulana Mahmood Madani

New Delhi: Jamiat Ulama-e-Hind President Maulana Mahmood Madani has welcomed the Karnataka Assembly’s approval of a law to prevent hate speech and hate crimes. He said that the Supreme Court of India has also repeatedly remarked that an “atmosphere of hatred” prevails in the country, which is seriously damaging the peace, brotherhood and democratic structure of the society. In such a situation, this step of the Karnataka government is a positive and important initiative towards social harmony and protecting the values enshrined in the Indian Constitution.

Maulana Madani said that Jamiat Ulama-e-Hind has been demanding for a long time to make effective laws against activities spreading hatred. In this regard, Jamiat has made efforts at many levels inside and outside the court. To stop the spread of hatred, Jamiat has also established a separate department. He reminded that it was on the petition of Jamiat Ulama-e-Hind that the Supreme Court ordered all the states toTehseen Poonawala GuidelinesInstructions were given for effective implementation.

He further said that in April 2023, the Supreme Court had clearly stated that it is the constitutional responsibility of the state machinery to take action against hate speech and for this one should not wait for any formal complaint, but suo motu action should be ensured. Unfortunately, most of the states have not yet taken any concrete steps in this direction. In such a situation, this initiative of the Karnataka government is a ray of hope.

Maulana Madani also emphasized that the success of any law against hatred and violence depends not only on its existence, but on its fair, transparent and non-discriminatory implementation. Therefore, it is necessary that this law be studied in depth and any ambiguity in its definitions be removed, so that in future no government can misuse it as a weapon against minorities or weaker sections.

Maulana Mahmood Madani reiterated the resolve that Jamiat Ulama-e-Hind will continue to play its fighting role for peace, brotherhood and supremacy of the Constitution across the country. He also appealed to all the state governments to make effective laws against hate speech and hate crimes in line with the directions of the Supreme Court, so that those poisoning the society can be held accountable.
