Bangladesh: Hindu man beaten to death on blasphemy charges amid unrest, body burnt

Police have confirmed to BBC Bangla that on December 18, 2025, a mob thrashed a Hindu textile worker, Dipu Chandra Das, to death and set his body on fire on charges of blasphemy in Bhaluka upazila of Mymensingh district.

The incident took place in Dubaliya Para area of ​​Square Master Bari. Das, who was a hired laborer at a local factory, was accused of making derogatory remarks about the Prophet Muhammad. Without any investigation, the mob beat him severely, tied his body to a tree and burnt it. The graphic videos went viral on social media.

Bhaluka Police Duty Officer Ripon Miya confirmed the identity and details of the victim. The body has been sent for post-mortem; Authorities are tracing the family, so no case has been registered yet.

The lynching coincided with the rise of nationwide protests following the death in Singapore (from earlier gunshot wounds) of the July uprising leader Sharif Osman Hadi. The demonstrations turned violent, with arson at media offices (Pratham Alo, Daily Star), sites associated with the Awami League, and anti-India slogans raised outside the Indian Assistant High Commission in Chittagong. Interim leader Muhammad Yunus declared national mourning on 20 December and appealed for peace. The unrest has raised concerns about the safety of minorities amid political tension ahead of elections in February.
