Supreme Court Rejects Bhullar’s Bail Plea, Hearing Pending in High Court

New Delhi, 19 December. The Supreme Court has refused to grant relief to Punjab’s Ropar DIG Harcharan Singh Bhullar, who was arrested on bribery charges. On Friday, the Supreme Court dismissed his bail petition, stating that it will not intervene at this stage as the matter is still pending before the High Court.
The court declined to hear the plea filed by Bhullar’s lawyer, after which the lawyer withdrew the petition.
Bhullar had challenged the jurisdiction of the CBI investigation in his case, arguing that the CBI did not have the required permission from the Punjab state government to register the case. Based on this, he approached the High Court seeking interim relief in the form of bail and a stay on the proceedings.
However, the High Court did not grant any interim relief and scheduled the next hearing after one month. Following this, Bhullar approached the Supreme Court for relief, but the apex court refused to intervene, clearly stating it would not interfere with the High Court’s decision at this stage.
It is noted that the CBI arrested Bhullar, who was posted as Ropar Range DIG, along with intermediary Krishanu Sharda on 16 October. They are accused of accepting a bribe of Rs 5 lakh from scrap dealer Akash. Sharda was arrested in Chandigarh, while DIG Bhullar was taken into custody from his office in Mohali.
During a search at Bhullar’s residence in Chandigarh, the CBI seized cash exceeding Rs 7.36 crore, jewellery worth over Rs 2.32 crore, 26 branded luxury watches, and documents related to nearly 50 immovable properties registered in the names of his family members. Another First Information Report was registered against DIG Bhullar based on a complaint by Inspector Sonal Mishra for accumulating disproportionate assets.
