Who killed MIT Professor Nuno Loureiro? What authorities revealed so far

The killing of an MIT professor has sent shockwaves through the academic community, as investigators confirmed a direct link between the crime and the suspect involved in the Brown University shooting. Authorities have identified Claudio Valente as the individual responsible for the fatal shooting of MIT professor Nuno Loureiro in Massachusetts.

According to US Attorney for the District of Massachusetts Leah Foley, Valente murdered Professor Loureiro at his home in Brookline, Massachusetts, on December 15. The announcement was made during a news conference held in Boston, days after Valente carried out a separate shooting at Brown University in Rhode Island.

Claudio Valente, a 48-year-old Portuguese national and former Brown University student, was later found dead in Salem, New Hampshire, after taking his own life. Law enforcement officials recovered two firearms and other evidence from Valente that linked him to both crime scenes.

Investigators revealed that Valente and Professor Loureiro had previously attended the same academic program in Portugal between 1995 and 2000. While authorities have not publicly detailed the nature of their relationship, this shared academic history has become a key focus of the investigation.

Officials have emphasized that Valente acted alone in both incidents. Providence Police Chief Oscar L. Perez Jr. stated that there is no evidence suggesting the involvement of any accomplices or coordinated planning with others.
