Indian art world lost a visionary artist, Ram Vanji Sutar, the craftsman who gave life to sculptures, fell into eternal sleep.

New Delhi. The country’s famous sculptor Ram Vanji Sutar died on Wednesday night at the age of 100. He was suffering from age related diseases. This information has been issued by his son Anil Sutar in a statement. He breathed his last at his home in Noida. Ram Sutar had designed the world’s tallest statue, the Statue of Unity. This statue of Sardar Patel is located on the banks of Narmada in Gujarat.

Son Anil Sutar said in the statement that it is with deep sorrow that I have to inform that my father Ram Vanji Sutar passed away at our residence on the midnight of 17th December. Ram Sutar was born on 19 February 1925 in Gondur village of Dhule district of Maharashtra. Sutar, attracted towards sculpture since childhood, won the Gold Medal from JJ School of Art and Architecture, Mumbai.

Statue of Nehru-Patel, Gandhi-Ambedkar, everyone

Ram Sutar’s greatest achievement is designing the world’s tallest statue – the ‘Statue of Unity’ (182 meters high) of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel in Gujarat. This statue is dedicated to India’s first Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister Sardar Patel. The carpenter made his mark at the global level by shaping this statue. At the age of 93, Sutar had completed this ambitious project, which is a symbol of his tireless hard work.

He is called India’s Statue Man (Ram Vanji Sutar). His works highlight history and culture. Sutar’s legacy includes thousands of monumental sculptures. He created the statue of Mahatma Gandhi in meditative posture outside the Parliament House, replicas of which were installed in 450 cities of India and abroad. He has also created the statue of the first PM Jawaharlal Nehru installed in the Parliament House complex. His statue is 18 feet high and has also been installed on the Bhakra Dam. He has also created a statue of Constitution maker Baba Saheb Ambedkar which has been installed in the Ambedkar Foundation in Delhi. The statue of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose made by him has been installed at Kolkata Airport.

Statues made by him are installed across the country

The large replica of Gandhiji for Karnataka’s Vidhana Soudha, the 108-foot tall Kempegowda statue at Bengaluru International Airport, the 45-foot tall memorial on the Chambal river, the 50-foot bronze statue depicting the hard work of workers at the Bhakra Nangal Dam, all are his creations.
He made statues of leaders like Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi, Bhagat Singh, Maharaja Ranjit Singh. He also contributed in the restoration of stone carvings of Ajanta-Ellora caves. Sutar received Padma Shri in 1999, Padma Bhushan in 2016 and Tagore Award. Recently in November 2025, he was honored with the Maharashtra Bhushan Award, which was presented by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis at his Noida residence as he was ill.

Three generations of the family are sculptors

Sutar, who became an independent sculptor in 1959, connected three generations of the family with this art along with his son Anil and grandson Sameer. Big projects were completed with hundreds of laborers in his workshop in Sector 63, Noida. Sutar’s sculptures are not just art but symbols of nation building. The Statue of Unity immortalized him, which gives the message of unity and development. His creations, spanning from Parliament to airports, will inspire generations to come. His death is an irreparable loss to the Indian art world. His legacy will always live on.

Ram Sutar was more than 100 years old. He celebrated his 100th birthday in February this year. After about two months he turns 101 years old. Due to his old age, many of his organs had become weak. Due to this he was unwell. This is why he died.
