New Zealand’s veteran resigned from his post, know the reason?

Key Points:

This decision comes after his tenure of almost two and a half years, which was filled with notable achievements on the field, but strategic differences within the organization continued to deepen.

Delhi: New Zealand Cricket (NZC) Chief Executive Officer Scott Weeninck has announced his resignation from his post. He will officially end his tenure on January 30, 2026. This decision comes after his tenure of almost two and a half years, which was filled with notable achievements on the field, but strategic differences within the organization continued to deepen.

Differences regarding T20 cricket

The main reason behind Weeninck’s resignation is said to be differences over the long-term priorities of New Zealand Cricket and the role of T20 cricket in the domestic cricket structure. These differences were particularly around future direction, structure of domestic competitions and use of resources, on which different stakeholders had differing opinions.

Veeninck’s tenure on the field was excellent

After being appointed as CEO of NZC in August 2023, Weeninck’s tenure was very successful in terms of sports. During this, the New Zealand women’s team won the T-20 World Cup title, while the men’s team registered a historic Test series win in India in 2024. Apart from this, the Kiwi men’s team also made it to the final of the Champions Trophy in 2025.

Resignation came in the era of new T20 league

Weeninck’s resignation comes at a time when New Zealand Cricket is working on plans to start a new franchise-based T20 league named ‘New Zealand 20’. Although this proposal has received support from players and many member associations, Weeninck had a different opinion on some important issues.

Amidst these strategic disagreements, he decided to step down, due to which the future of New Zealand cricket and the direction of the new T20 league will largely depend on the incoming leadership.
