Supreme Court imposed a fine of Rs 10 crore each on 10 dental colleges of Rajasthan for breaking rules.

New Delhi. The Supreme Court has taken a tough stance on 10 private dental colleges of Rajasthan for violating the rules of admission to Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS). The court has imposed a fine of Rs 10 crore each on all these colleges. The court said that these colleges deliberately ignored the rules, which damaged the standards of medical education. A bench of Justices Vijay Bishnoi and JK Maheshwari expressed displeasure over the role of the colleges as well as the state government. The court ordered the Rajasthan government to deposit Rs 10 lakh with the Rajasthan State Legal Services Authority (RSLSA) for not following the legal procedure in BDS admissions (academic session 2016-17).

What was the matter?

There is a minimum percentage fixed in NEET exam for admission to BDS. The Rajasthan government, without any authority, gave additional relaxation in this minimum percentage by first 10 percent and then by five percent. Due to this relaxation, many students got admission who did not fulfill the prescribed eligibility. Not only this, some colleges admitted students beyond this 10+5 percent relaxation, which was completely against the rules.

Relief to students, strictness on colleges

The Supreme Court gave relief to the students admitted in 2016-17 on humanitarian grounds. Using its special powers, the court legalized (regularized) his BDS degree. However, the students who have got the relief have been directed to file an affidavit in the Rajasthan High Court and be ready to render free service in case of disaster, pandemic or any emergency in the state.
