Criminal cases going on against 3000 lawyers in UP, High Court sought information about all the advocate associations of the state.

Prayagraj, 20 December. Allahabad High Court has written a letter to the Registrars and Societies of all the districts across the state, seeking the list of active advocate organizations in the state, so that it can be found out how many advocate associations are active in UP. According to the report of ETV Bharat, the High Court has also directed the state government to give the police station-wise list of those lawyers against whom criminal cases are pending.

During the hearing of a case, it was revealed that the lawyer himself was a notorious criminal.

It is noteworthy that during the hearing on the petition of advocate Mohammad Kafeel, the court came to know that the petitioner himself is involved in many criminal cases including Gangster Act and his brothers are notorious criminals. Expressing concern over the impact of criminal background of lawyers on the administration of justice, the court had said that advocates and bar association officials hold special institutional status. They are also officers of the court and guardians of professional ethics.

The court expressed serious concern

The Court said that when persons facing serious criminal charges hold positions of influence in the legal system, there is a legitimate concern that they may exercise undue influence over police officers and judicial processes under the guise of professional legitimacy. The court had directed all commissioners, SSPs, SPs and joint directors of prosecution to submit comprehensive details of criminal cases pending against lawyers registered with the UP Bar Council.

Justice Vinod Diwakar has asked to submit the police station wise list before the next hearing. In this sequence, during the hearing held on Friday, Additional Advocate General Anup Trivedi told the court that the list is almost ready and will be presented in the court soon. In the investigation so far, there is information about the ongoing cases against about three thousand lawyers.

Next hearing of the case on January 8

In the affidavit filed by the DGP, the criminal history of the lawyers was presented, while in the affidavit of the DG Prosecution, information about the trial of the cases was given. The court has directed to give all the information by January 8, 2026. The next hearing will be on January 8. On the instructions of the court, UP Bar Council has also submitted its affidavit and assured action against the tainted lawyers.
