Mob lynching of a youth from Chhattisgarh in Kerala: Suspicion took away the life of an innocent person, 5 criminals arrested…Is this humanity?
Raipur. A sensational case of a migrant laborer from Chhattisgarh being beaten to death by a mob has come to light in Palakkad district of Kerala. Ramnarayan Baghel (31) died in this incident which took place on December 17. It is alleged that the local people caught him on suspicion of being a Bangladeshi infiltrator and a thief and beat him brutally, due to which he died on the spot.
The deceased Ramnarayan Baghel was a resident of Karhi village in Sakti district of Chhattisgarh. He had reached Palakkad district of Kerala about a week ago in search of work. The incident took place in Attapallam area of Walayar police station area. A video of the incident has also surfaced, in which the violence being carried out by the mob can be seen.
The dead body of Ramnarayan Baghel (40) is still in Kerala.
More than 80 injuries confirmed in postmortem
According to Dr. Hitesh Shankar, who conducted the postmortem, more than 80 injury marks were found on Ramnarayan’s body. There was no part of the body which was not injured. He suffered serious head injuries and died due to excessive bleeding. Police say that Ramnarayan died due to pain and severe internal injuries.
According to Kerala Police, Ramnarayan was in an intoxicated state at the time of the incident, but no evidence related to the theft was found from him. Despite this, the local people beat him badly.
Timely information not given to family
Shashikant Baghel, cousin of the deceased, alleged that the family was not informed on time about Ramnarayan’s death. The police only told that he was in the police station and asked him to come immediately. When the family reached Kerala, they got information about the death. Ramnarayan leaves behind two young sons, aged 8 and 10 years.
The family members have expressed their displeasure over the compensation not being announced till now, accusing the Kerala government and the police administration of negligence. He has demanded strict punishment for the culprits, financial assistance and sending the dead body to the native village with dignity.

Allegation of mob lynching
Social activist Jabbar has clearly termed this incident as mob lynching. He alleged that Ramnarayan was targeted with communal and hateful mentality by calling him a Bangladeshi. He said that initially the police did not take the case seriously and tried to send the body back without a thorough investigation.
Human Rights Commission took cognizance
Taking the incident seriously, the State Human Rights Commission has taken suo motu cognizance. The commission has summoned a detailed report from the Palakkad district police chief within three weeks and directed to take strict action against the accused.
Five accused arrested
Amid increasing pressure after the incident, Walayar police on December 18 arrested five accused involved in the case, Murali, Prasad, Anu, Bipin and Anandan. All the accused are said to be residents of Attapallam village. The police have also clarified that Ramnarayan Baghel had no criminal record. A case has been registered under section 103(1) of the Indian Justice Code (BNS) under crime number 975/2025 at Walayar police station.
