Are you a thyroid patient? Know this truth before drinking morning tea or coffee – ..

News India Live, Digital Desk: For us Indians, the morning is incomplete without a sip of tea or coffee. As soon as the eyes open, the hand automatically moves towards the cup. On top of that, if you are a ‘coffee lover’, then there is nothing to ask! The lamp of the brain lights up only because of that fragrance.

But wait… if you are a thyroid patient and take Thyroid pills (Thyroxine) every morning on an empty stomach, then this lovely habit of yours can take a toll on your health.

Many people have been taking medicines for years but their report is that thyroid level does not come under control or weight does not reduce. A major reason for this could be the timing of your ‘morning coffee’.

Let us understand in very simple language what is the matter and what precautions you should take.

Is coffee the enemy of thyroid medicine?

Not an enemy, but definitely an ‘obstacle’.
In fact, when you wake up in the morning and take a thyroid pill, the medicine needs at least 30 to 45 minutes to dissolve in your body and work, that too on an empty stomach.

Coffee (and tea too) contains caffeine and some acids that change the internal environment of the stomach. Research shows that if you drink coffee immediately after taking medicine, your intestines are not able to absorb that medicine properly.

It simply means that you took the pill, but your body did not get its full effect. Consider it like you took 100mg of medicine, but your body got only 60mg because on top of that you drank coffee.

So should thyroid patients give up coffee?

No way! You don’t need to give up your preferences, you just need to be a little ‘smarter’. If you have to drink coffee, include these 3 easy rules in your daily routine:

1. “One Hour” Rule (Golden Rule)
This is most important. Between the time you take your thyroid medication and your coffee, at least 60 minutes (1 hour) Keep a gap of. 30 minutes is also fine, but doctors consider 1 hour to be the safest. This gives the medicine full time to do its work.

2. Only water, no coffee on an empty stomach
Do not drink caffeine (coffee/tea) straight away after waking up in the morning. This is bad not only for the medicine, but also for your hormones. Coffee increases ‘cortisol’ (stress hormone) in the body. Similarly, our stress hormones increase in the morning. So, after waking up, first drink one or two glasses of plain water, take your medicine, and then wait for your coffee.

3. Coffee with milk or black coffee?
If you drink coffee or tea with milk along with or immediately after the medicine, it is even more harmful. Calcium present in milk further reduces the absorption of the medicine. Therefore it is very important to keep a gap.

What to do if you are in a hurry?

Many people say that “We do not have enough time in the morning to take medicine, wait for an hour and then drink coffee.”

There is also a solution to this:
If you have a very busy schedule, drink your coffee after reaching office or work. Take your medicine before leaving home, and enjoy a coffee on the way or when you get there. By then the necessary time will have passed.

small change, big impact
Health is not a one day job. If you are taking medicine regularly, then take full advantage of it. Try making this small change in your morning timing, you will definitely feel the difference in your energy and reports.
