GOLD SILVER: How to check purity? Is gold pure or not?
- Hall marks are given by ISO (Indian Standard Organization) to identify the purity of gold. 999 is written on 24 carat gold jewellery, 958 on 23 carat, 916 on 22 carat, 875 on 21 carat and 750 on 18 carat.
- While buying gold, keep in mind that 24 carat gold should have 1.0 purity (24/24 = 1.00). 22 carat gold has 0.916 purity (22/24 = 0.916). If we understand in simple words, 24 carat gold is 99.9 percent pure and 22 carat gold is approximately 91 percent pure.
- Keep in mind that jewelery is prepared by mixing 9% other metals like copper, silver, zinc in 22 carat gold. There is no adulteration in 24 carat, its coins are available, but jewelery cannot be made of 24 carat gold, hence most of the shopkeepers sell 18, 20 and 22 carat gold and make jewelery from it.
Hallmarking rules on silver
- The rule of hallmarking is applicable on silver jewelery from September 2025. However, hallmarking is not mandatory for silver. You can also buy unhallmarked silver.
- Under the rules of hallmarking, there will be a 6 digit unique HUID code on the silver. This will immediately tell what purity the jewel is and whether it is genuine or not.
- The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has set 6 new standards for the purity of silver – 800, 835, 900, 925, 970 and 990. Numbers 925 or 9250 mean that the silver is 92.5% pure.
Note- The gold and silver rates given above are indicative and do not include other charges like GST, TCS and making charges. Contact your local jeweler or jewelers shop for exact rates.
