1-The largest and most modern capacity terminal
This new terminal is seven times bigger than the old terminal and is spread over about 1.4 lakh square meters. When fully operational, it will be able to handle 13.1 million (ie 1.3 crore) passengers annually. It has the capacity to handle 34 flights per hour, which is the highest in the Northeast. This will make Guwahati a major connectivity hub between India and South-East Asia.
2-Unique design inspired by nature
This is the first airport in India which is completely built on the theme of nature. Rare orchid flowers of Assam (especially Kopau flower or foxtail orchid) and bamboo have been used extensively in the design. Visitors will feel as if they are entering a forest.
3-Beautiful bamboo roof
The roof of the terminal is made of bamboo, which is a cultural symbol of the Northeast. A total of 140 metric tons of local bamboo has been used. This has given the building a distinct and warm identity. This bamboo roof will also promote cultural exchange.
4-Orchid Inspired Pillar
The terminal has 57 special pillars, which look like vases of Kopau flowers. These reflect the beauty of orchids and give a floral look to the entire interior.
5-Experience like sky forest
A unique ‘Sky Forest’ has been created, in which about one lakh local plant species have been planted. There are lush green areas inspired by Kaziranga National Park. As soon as the travelers arrive, they will feel themselves in the forests of Assam as if nature is really welcoming them.
6-Glimpse of the culture of Assam
The design takes inspiration from the Jaapi (traditional cap) of Assam, the symbol of the rhinoceros, artefacts from Majuli Island and the Brahmaputra River. Kaziranga also has green landscapes and rhinoceros sculptures. This terminal is not just an airport but a living display of the culture of Assam.
7-Modern digital facilities
There are 14 entry gates for the convenience of passengers, including 4 Digitriya gates. Faster security checks with full-body scanners, automatic baggage handling, fast-track immigration and AI-driven airport operations are everything. Travel will become much easier and faster.
8-Sustainable and eco-friendly
The terminal is also good for the environment with its use of local materials, green plants and nature-theme. This shows that development and heritage can go together.
9-Big step in regional development
This terminal will make the North-East more attractive for tourism, trade and investment. Guwahati will now become the gateway to South-East Asia. This will increase jobs and strengthen the economy.
10-Special moment of inauguration
Prime Minister Modi himself visited the terminal and described it as a ‘festival of development’. This was part of his two-day visit to Assam, which also saw the launch of several other projects.
This new terminal is a matter of pride for Assam and the entire North-East. Now traveling will become even more fun and convenient! If you ever go to Guwahati, do see this beautiful terminal.
