Varanasi,. The Municipal Corporation Administration has started a campaign to keep public places and especially Ganga Ghats clean in Varanasi city of Uttar Pradesh. Action is being taken against those who spit in public places after consuming paan or gutkha and fine will be imposed if caught.

According to the Public Relations Office of the Municipal Corporation, special vigil is being kept on those spitting gutkha on the Ganga ghats. To ensure that there is no encroachment on the ghats, illegally kept boats, construction material and scrap wood are being removed. The places on the walls along the ghats that were soiled by betel leaf are being cleaned and wall painting is also being done there. Along with this, advertisement posters installed illegally on the ghats are being identified and removed. Cleaning of flower garlands and other garbage on the banks of river Ganga is being done continuously through nets. The old and rotten dustbins installed on the ghats are also being replaced with new dustbins.

The Municipal Corporation Administration said that last Saturday, Municipal Commissioner Himanshu Nagpal conducted a surprise inspection of the Ganga Ghats. During the inspection, a person was caught spitting after eating gutkha at Harishchandra Ghat. The Municipal Commissioner warned him not to do it again and also collected a fine of Rs 500 from him. During this time, displeasure was expressed and warnings were expressed against local people operating shops illegally by setting up kiosks and other temporary structures at some ghats.
