BCCI Planning to Remove Suryakumar Yadav as India’s T20 Captain?

The selection committee of India is ready to unveil the final list of players for the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 on the 20th of December. Moreover, it has been a rumor for a long time that the 35-year-old cricket team captain, Suryakumar Yadav, might not be the most suitable player to lead the team during the transition period after the ICC T20 World Cup, says PTI.

The speculation that Yadav could be dropped from the leadership role has apparently not been confirmed as Suryakumar, the most talented batsman in the T20 format, would be left wondering about his future as the Indian team’s captain and his role in the coming World Cup.

The board of cricket in India will announce the squad of 15 players on Saturday, the 20th of December, with the option of altering the squad until the World Cup’s opening day, which is February 7, for that matter.

Reports are suggesting that Suryakumar Yadav may not continue as the captain of India’s T20I team

Yadav’s performance as the leader has been the main problem for the Indian batting order, especially considering that he has been out of form for over a year and a half. There have been frequent discussions about the need for his removal from the squad owing to his lack of runs; however, his leadership has been the only thing keeping him in the team.

The 35-year-old player has been out of form for more than a year now, and it is only natural that the scrutiny on Suryakumar Yadav’s form would increase after the World Cup, especially when there are so many promising players still waiting for an opportunity to be a part of the Indian T20I squad.

The first step towards this motive is to dethrone him from the captaincy post T20 World Cup, and while the members of the committee and the BCCI have kept mum on this issue, the message seems to be slowly emerging from the dressing room. Gambhir has also dropped hints towards the same, calling out Shubman Gill for the all-format captaincy for India.

Yashasvi Jaiswal may get the nod as the backup opener before the T20 World Cup

Shubman Gill has continued to keep his place in the team due to his weak form and his reasons are the same as he is the vice-captain and the head coach, Gautam Gambhir has a lot of trust in him. On the other hand, Yashasvi Jaiswal has been waiting for the chance to step into playing XI straight from the bench.

Jaiswal had a great series against South Africa, where he was one of the main run-scorers, he ended the series as the second-highest run-scorer for India with his first-ever hundred. Besides, he has proved time and again that he is a more adaptable shot-maker than both Shubman Gill and his understudy, Sanju Samson.

It will be very curious indeed to notice if India pronounces him as a backup in the World Cup squad and perhaps tries him with one or two games in the New Zealand series, as the Men in Blue will be playing the series with their World Cup squad.

Should India go for Rinku Singh instead of Sundar? The only weak link that is in the Indian T20I squad is Washington Sundar, who has neither been able to prove his worth nor has a clear role in the team. Sundar is only an alternate player and even that as a bowling all-rounder.

It would be very much like India to name Rinku Singh, the left-handed middle-order batter who can replace anyone injured, or even come in as a replacement for Shivam Dube or Axar Patel, if they are not effective enough for the World Cup.

Rinku Singh has been omitted from the T20I squad post the Asia Cup as Gambhir feels that the T20 format needs only those players who can contribute both with the bat and the ball.
