Cbi Arrests Defense Officer Rishvatkhor

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested Lieutenant Colonel Deepak Kumar Sharma, working under the Defense Ministry, in a major corruption case. This arrest was made on Saturday (December 20). Lieutenant Colonel Sharma was at that time posted as Deputy Planning Officer for International Cooperation and Exports in the Department of Defense Production. A private person Vinod Kumar has also been arrested in this case.

CBI took this action on the basis of the FIR registered on December 19. According to the agency, this action was based on information received from a reliable source. Along with Lieutenant Colonel Deepak Sharma, his wife Colonel Kajal Bali has also been named in the FIR. Colonel Kajal Bali is currently posted as the Commanding Officer of 16 Infantry Division Ordnance Unit in Sriganganagar, Rajasthan. Apart from this, a Dubai-based company and its representatives have also been accused in this case along with several others. Sections of criminal conspiracy and bribery have been imposed in the case.

According to the CBI, Lt Col Sharma had developed a pattern of corrupt activities in association with officials and representatives of private companies involved in defense production and exports. The agency claims that he took bribes in exchange for providing illegal benefits and official support to these companies. Investigation has revealed that he was misusing his position to influence government processes.

The CBI investigation also revealed that two persons named Rajeev Yadav and Ravjeet Singh were handling the India operations of the accused Dubai-based company and were in constant touch with Lt Col Sharma. It is alleged that these people worked with Sharma through illegal means to obtain undue benefits from various government departments. In this connection, on December 18, Vinod Kumar had handed over ₹ 3 lakh cash to Lieutenant Colonel Sharma on the instructions of the company.

After the arrest, CBI conducted raids at many places including Delhi, Sriganganagar, Bengaluru and Jammu. During these raids the agency recovered bribe amount of ₹3 lakh. Additionally, ₹2.23 crore cash was seized from a Delhi residence and ₹10 lakh cash was seized from a Sriganganagar home. CBI has also taken other incriminating documents and materials into its possession.

Lieutenant Colonel Deepak Sharma and Vinod Kumar were produced in the court on 20 December, from where both have been sent to police custody till 23 December. CBI has clarified that the investigation in the case is ongoing and other accused involved and aspects of the transaction are also being investigated in depth.
