WEST BENGAL: A man has been arrested for harassing West Bengal singer Lagnajita Chakraborty. The singer alleged that accused Mehboob Malik abused and tried to attack her during her live show at a private school in Bhagwanpur, East Midnapore. Lagnajita Chakraborty, who became famous with the Bengali song ‘Basanto Eshe Gechhe’, told that she was singing a Bengali religious song, ‘Jaago Maa’, when Malik came on the stage and tried to physically attack her. “He wanted to kill me,” Lagnajita Chakraborty said in her police complaint. She said he was shouting at her and saying, “Enough, wake up mother, now sing some secular song.”

The Bharatiya Janata Party alleged that Malik is a member of the ruling Trinamool Congress. BJP’s Shankudeb Panda said, “West Bengal is in the hands of jihadists. They are telling the singer which song he should sing. This was an anti-Hindu attitude.” “When she (Lagnajita Chakraborty) went to the police station, Mamata Banerjee’s police refused to file a police complaint,” he alleged. However, there was no immediate reaction from Trinamool Congress.
Singer also alleged that the officer in-charge of Bhagwanpur police station refused to register the case. Later a case was registered and Malik was arrested. Police officer Mithun Dey said, “A departmental inquiry has been initiated against the in-charge of Bhagwanpur police station and another officer. We will take action against them for their negligence.”
