Pakistan: Court sentences Imran and Bushra Bibi to 17-17 years in Toshakhana case

pakistanA mountain of legal troubles has fallen for former Prime Minister Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi. On Saturday, a special accountability court running in Rawalpindi’s high-security Adiala Jail declared both of them guilty in the much talked about ‘Tosha Khana-2’ corruption case and sentenced them to 17 years of rigorous imprisonment each.

Due to security reasons, this decision was taken care of by Special Central Judge Shahrukh Arjumande inside Adiala Jail. The court has also convicted both of them under Section 409 of the Pakistan Penal Code and has awarded them an additional sentence of 7 years each. Along with the punishment, the court also imposed a fine of Rs. Also imposed a fine of Rs 1 crore. When Chukado came, Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi were present in the courtroom.

This entire controversy is related to the expensive government gifts received from the Saudi Arabian government in the year 2021. Imran Khan and Bushra Biba kept the expensive gifts received from foreign governments against the rules. The allegation of malpractice in the valuation of these gifts, causing loss to the state treasury and embezzlement has been proved. The court has termed this act as ‘betrayal’ of the state.

The case was first investigated by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB), which was later handed over to the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA). After the charge sheet was filed in September 2024, charges were framed against both of them on 12 December 2024. It is noteworthy that earlier both were acquitted in the Toshakhana-1 case, but this punishment in the second case has dashed their hopes of freedom.

This punishment has come at a time when Imran Khan is serving ‘solitary confinement’ in jail. His party PTI and supporters have alleged that he is being treated inhumanely in jail. The United Nations (UN) has also expressed concern over this matter and appealed to immediately bring Imran Khan out of solitary confinement.
