False propaganda by Bangladeshi media, Foreign Ministry rejects allegations of threatening Bangladeshi diplomats!
The Government of India has completely rejected the reports in some sections of the Bangladeshi media regarding the protest outside the Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi on December 20, terming them as misleading propaganda. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has clarified that there was neither any security lapse nor any threat to Bangladeshi diplomats.
Responding to media queries on Sunday, the official spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs, Randhir Jaiswal, said that on December 20, a small group of about 20–25 youth had gathered outside the Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi to protest against the brutal murder of Dipu Chandra Das, a member of the minority Hindu community, in Mymensingh district of Bangladesh. He said the protesters had condemned the killing and demanded protection of minorities in Bangladesh.
Randhir Jaiswal clearly said, “At no point was there any attempt to break the fence nor did any security situation arise.” He also rejected claims that the protesters threatened the Bangladesh High Commissioner or mission. According to the spokesperson, the Delhi Police deployed at the spot had peacefully removed the protesters within a few minutes and visual evidence of the entire incident is publicly available.
This clarification from MEA comes after a report published in ‘Amar Desh’, a daily newspaper of Bangladesh. That report claimed that an aggressive mob crossed the security barricades in Chanakyapuri area and issued threats to Bangladesh High Commissioner Riyaz Hamidullah. The report also said that the incident occurred when the High Commissioner and his family were present in the residence.
Terming these allegations as completely baseless, the Ministry of External Affairs reiterated that India is fully committed to ensuring the security of all foreign missions and diplomats under the Vienna Convention. Randhir Jaiswal also said that India is closely monitoring the situation in Bangladesh and is in touch with Bangladeshi authorities on the issue.
He further said, “Our officials have expressed their grave concern over the attacks on minorities and urged that those responsible for the brutal murder of Dipu Chandra Das be brought to justice.”
After this statement of the Ministry of External Affairs, it has become clear that the protest in New Delhi was limited, peaceful and short-lived, while it was exaggerated in some sections of the Bangladeshi media. India has once again reiterated that it not only fully abides by its diplomatic obligations, but will also continue to openly express its concern over cases of violence against minorities in neighboring countries.
