Alexander Isak injury update — Liverpool suspects broken leg to add to Premier League woes

Liverpool and Sweden forward Alexander Isak might miss out on a significant amount of time in the second half of the season, as he is suspected of having broken his leg during the Premier League match against Tottenham Hotspur on December 20.

According to The Athleticthe player and the club suspect a fracture in the lower part of Isak’s right leg, though the exact extent of his injury is yet to be known.

Isak, who had replaced Conor Bradley at half-time, scored the opener for the Reds, steering the ball off Florian Wirtz’s pass into the net. However, he was brought down awkwardly by a sliding challenge from Spurs defender Micky van de Ven, turning his moment of joy into one with excruciating pain.

Isak received treatment but was still unable to continue, and was helped off the pitch by two members of Liverpool’s medical staff. Jeremie Frimpong then replaced him.

When asked about the injury after the match, Liverpool manager Arne Slot said, “We’ll have to wait and see. But if a player scores and then gets injured and doesn’t try to come back on the pitch, that’s usually not a good thing.”

Isak went for MRI scans on Sunday to determine the extent of the damage, and a report of the same would determine for how long the Swede will be out of action.

A typical broken leg injury rules a player out for about four months.

Isak joined Liverpool from Newcastle in a record Premier League £125m deal in September, but has struggled to get going at Anfield. He has three goals and an assist in 15 appearances for the Reds so far.

Liverpool has failed to emulate the success it had last season — it lifted the title in Slot’s maiden Premier League season — with three consecutive losses last month. It has won nine of the 17 matches in the Premier League this season, and is currently fifth after a good spell of six unbeaten games in all competitions.

However, the Premier League champion could be without Isak and Mohamed Salah, with the latter off to Morocco for the Africa Cup of Nations with Egypt.
