According to the Germany-based GFZ German Research Center for Geosciences, the earthquake’s intensity was measured at 6.4 on the Richter scale. This earthquake occurred before noon according to Indian time, while according to international time the incident was recorded at 10:31:28 GMT.

The epicenter of the earthquake was at a depth of about 108.8 kilometers underground. Its initial coordinates are given as 5.78 degrees south latitude and 145.50 degrees east longitude. part of the ring of fire

Papua New Guinea is located in a highly geologically sensitive area. The country is part of the Pacific Ocean’s ‘Ring of Fire’, which is counted among the most active seismic and volcanic regions in the world. According to media reports, many of the world’s most active volcanoes are located in this region, due to which earthquakes and volcanic activities are often seen here.

Earthquake shocks in Afghanistan also

Earlier on December 19, earthquake tremors were also felt in Afghanistan. The intensity of the earthquake there was recorded at 4.1 and its depth was about 10 kilometers from the ground. According to the National Geology Centre, the Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan is considered highly sensitive to earthquakes.

frequent seismic activities

Experts say that the main cause of earthquake is the movement of tectonic plates. Afghanistan is located in the collision zone of the Indian, Eurasian and Arabian tectonic plates. Due to continuous sliding and collision of these plates, seismic activities occur there again and again. Similarly, Papua New Guinea is also located in the confluence area of several tectonic plates, due to which there is a risk of powerful earthquakes. At present, the situation regarding the recent earthquake in Papua New Guinea is being monitored and people have been appealed to remain alert.
