There is pain in calf at night: Know the reason and how to get relief with home remedies.

There can be many hidden reasons behind pain in calf muscles while resting at night. It is possible to reduce it through natural methods. Often this pain is caused by muscle fatigue, dehydration, mineral deficiency, obstruction in blood circulation, nerve problems or sleeping position that shortens the muscles.

Calf muscle pain at night may feel like a sudden cramp or occasional dull ache. The muscles become stiff or tight and pain is felt at rest, before going to sleep. Sometimes small jerks or twitching of the muscles may also occur. Due to this, there is temporary difficulty in stretching the legs and the person keeps moving his legs restlessly.

There can be many reasons behind this type of pain. Overuse of muscles, fatigue, strenuous exercise, standing or walking for long periods of time are common causes. Not drinking enough water or deficiency of magnesium, potassium, calcium can also cause pain. Being inactive reduces blood circulation, which causes muscle cramps. Pressure on nerves or problems like spinal stenosis, diabetic neuropathy can also be the cause. The sleeping position in which the legs are downwards shortens the calf muscles. Certain medications and pregnancy may also increase the risk.

To prevent this pain, it is important to stay hydrated and drink adequate amount of water. It is helpful to stretch the calf and hamstring muscles before sleeping. Do light exercises to keep the muscles active and elevate the legs to improve blood circulation. Be alert if sudden, intense pain is accompanied by swelling, warmth, or redness. Consult a doctor immediately in case of numbness, tingling or weakness.

Before sleeping, lightly stretch the calf muscles, massage with warm oil and use hot compress or hot water bag. One should drink enough water throughout the day and include mineral-rich diet like bananas, coconut water, nuts, seeds, green leafy vegetables. Take a light walk after dinner and keep your feet warm at night. Avoid heavy exercise late in the evening and take slow and deep breaths before sleeping. Stretch and straighten your legs and bend your toes up and down. Due to which there is no problem of strain or pain in the calves.
