MVA’s defeat in local body elections, will BJP-Shiv Sena dominate in BMC?
Mahayuti has registered a landslide victory in the recently held local body elections in Maharashtra. Out of the total 288 urban body seats, Mahayuti captured 215 seats, while the performance of Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) was very weak and it won only 51 top posts. BJP shows strong hold in North Maharashtra
BJP showed a strong hold in Vidarbha and North Maharashtra, while Shiv Sena was successful in Thane and Konkan regions. NCP also achieved some limited success, but the performance of Congress and Uddhav Thackeray’s party made the party’s position challenging.
In the elections held in Municipal Council and Nagar Panchayats, BJP won 129 seats, Shiv Sena won 51 and NCP won 35 seats. At the same time, in MVA, Congress had to be content with only 35 seats, Uddhav Thackeray’s party 9 and Sharad Pawar’s party 7 seats. The leaders of Mahayuti are considering this victory as a victory of development, while the constituent parties of MVA are calling it a victory achieved through cash distribution.
BJP had the highest strike rate in this election. The party fielded candidates on 3,450 seats and won 2,180, i.e. a strike rate of 63.1 percent. Shiv Sena’s strike rate was 54.9 percent and NCP’s was 44.3 percent. In contrast, the performance of the MVA constituents was quite weak. Congress fielded candidates on 1,980 seats and won only 495. Uddhav Thackeray’s party won only 285 seats out of 1,540 and Sharad Pawar’s party won only 190 seats out of 1,100.
Eyes on municipal elections to be held on January 15
Now everyone’s eyes are on the municipal elections to be held on January 15. BJP-Shiv Sena alliance has announced to contest the elections together, while Congress will contest alone. Uddhav Thackeray’s party is in talks with Raj Thackeray for an alliance, but no agreement has been reached yet. Due to MVA’s defeat in the civic elections, tension has increased within them too.
