Amit Mishra made his ODI debut for India in 2003, Test debut in 2008 and T20I debut in 2010. The leg-spinner represented India in 22 Tests, 36 ODIs and 10 T20Is, taking 76, 64 and 16 wickets respectively.

Dhoni’s support
Mishra talked about how Dhoni helped him while playing for India. Mishra recalls his last ODI against New Zealand, where he bowled a brilliant 18/5 on Dhoni’s advice.
Mishra said, “I had Dhoni’s support. When I was part of the playing eleven, there was never a time when Dhoni didn’t give me tips. He was always telling me things. I was playing against New Zealand, which was my last ODI series. Dhoni was the captain.” It was a tough match. I came to bowl. We had scored 260 or 270 runs. I concentrated on stopping runs and didn’t think about taking wickets.
A match-changing bowling spell
He added, “After a few overs, Dhoni came to me and said I wasn’t bowling in my natural way. He told me not to think too much and do what I always do. I did that and got a wicket. He said, ‘This is your bowling. Bowl like that. Don’t think too much.’ It was a match-changing bowling spell. I took five wickets. I think it was my best bowling spell as well. He thought that if I don’t take wickets, we will lose the match. That’s how he supported me.”

Mishra’s retirement
Amit Mishra retired from all forms of cricket in September 2025. He played 162 IPL matches, taking 174 wickets. Amit Mishra also took three hat-tricks in IPL. MS Dhoni is one of India’s most successful captains. He has helped many players flourish under his leadership.
