Bangladesh is shocked! Visa services suspended after India’s action, stir from Delhi to Dhaka

Bangladesh Visa Service Suspended: Diplomatic tension between India and Bangladesh has deepened. Delhi-based Bangladesh High Commission has temporarily suspended consular and visa services for Indian citizens. This decision has been taken by the High Commission at a time when India had earlier stopped visa services in many cities of Bangladesh.

In fact, on Sunday, India had indefinitely suspended visa services at the Indian Visa Application Center (IVAC) in Chittagong, Bangladesh. Apart from this, Indian visa services were also closed in Khulna, Rajshahi and Chattogram. Protests outside India’s visa office in Chittagong turned violent with allegations of stone pelting by protesters.

Visa services suspended in view of violent protests

Bangladesh’s decision to close visa services in Delhi is being seen as a response to India’s move. However, experts say that the number of Indian citizens going to Bangladesh remains limited and they mainly include journalists and businessmen.

India had decided to stop visa services in view of the violent protests that broke out in Bangladesh. These demonstrations started after the death of Bangladesh youth leader Sharif Usman Hadi. After Hadi’s death, incidents of arson, vandalism and violence were reported in many parts of the country, in which anti-India slogans were also raised.

How was Hadi murdered?

On December 12, Sharif Usman Hadi was shot in the head by masked attackers during an election event in Dhaka’s Bijoynagar area. Seriously injured Hadi was taken to Singapore for treatment where he died on Thursday. After his death, tension spread throughout Bangladesh.

Even during Hadi’s funeral, a large number of people raised anti-India slogans. Meanwhile, National Citizen Party worker force chief Motlab Shikdar was also shot in Khulna on Monday. This party is believed to be linked to student leader Naheed Islam, who is considered the main face of the anti-Sheikh Hasina movement.

Bangladesh’s allegations and India’s reply

Bangladesh’s Foreign Advisor Tauheed Hussain claimed that Bangladeshi High Commissioner in Delhi Riyaz Hamidullah has received death threats. He said that on Saturday, 20 to 25 people had demonstrated outside the Bangladeshi Mission in Delhi.
