Suryakumar Yadav has great confidence before the World Cup, said- I will return in T20 World Cup in full form.

Mumbai: For the first time after the drought of runs in T20, Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav admitted that his form is not good. However, he has expressed confidence that he will return to form before the T20 World Cup starting on February 7. Playing at No. 3 and 4 in the last one year, Suryakumar has scored runs in 22 innings without scoring a half-century at an average of only 12.84 and a strike rate of 117.87. In the five-match T20 series against South Africa, he scored 12, 5, 12 and 5 and now he has only five matches left before the T20 World Cup. After the selection of the Indian team for the T20 World Cup, Suryakumar said with a laugh at BCCI’s Mumbai headquarters, “This patch has been a bit long. I think everyone has seen this in their career. I too will overcome this. I know what to do. I know where things are going wrong. I have some time to work on it. Now the New Zealand series and the T20 World Cup are coming up. You can definitely see Surya making a comeback.” Will see.”

Suryakumar’s form has not been in his favor since he took over the captaincy from Rohit Sharma after the 2024 T20 World Cup victory. Last year, against South Africa, he could cross the figure of 5 only once in three innings. He was out for 0 twice in five innings against England at the beginning of the year and his best score was 14. Seven months later, Suryakumar played an unbeaten inning of 47 runs against Pakistan in the Asia Cup but after that his form again deteriorated. But he said, “My form is fine, I’m just not getting the runs.”

After this, in Australia, Suryakumar crossed the 20 mark thrice in four innings and his strike rate remained above 160. But as soon as he returned home, his bat fell silent again against South Africa and he could score runs at an average of only 8.50. Even during this series, when he was asked about his form, he again said that he was not out of form, he was just not getting runs. Due to his 360 degree style batting and consistency, Suryakumar reached the top of the ICC T20 rankings. He has the second most Player of the Series awards in T20 after Virat Kohli. In 2022, he scored 1164 runs at an average of 46.56 and strike rate of 187.43, which is an Indian record. In terms of most centuries in T20, Suryakumar (4) is currently just one century behind Rohit Sharma and Glenn Maxwell (5).

When asked if he watches old videos of his batting to get back into form, Suryakumar said, “I have been watching the same for the last three months. When you have batted well and performed well for India, you definitely watch the videos of those times. And you want to perform like that again. But yes, I am trying, I am batting very well in the nets. That’s the thing, there is an invisible barrier which stops you. It’s not visible but I’m sure I’ll be back.”

When the selection committee led by Ajit Agarkar gathered in Mumbai to choose the Indian team for the T20 World Cup, one thing that was in their mind was that the form of both the team captain and vice-captain Shubman Gill has not been good for some time. In T20, Shubman Gill had not scored a half-century in the last 18 innings and against South Africa also his scores were 28,0 and 4. Although the selectors are hopeful that Suryakumar will return to form before the T20 World Cup, they did not include Gill in the 15-member squad. Agarkar said, “Suryakumar has been the No. 1 batsman in T20 for the last few years and we think he will return to form. He knows what he has to do. We expect him to become the No. 1 batsman again in the World Cup.”
