This step was taken just a day after India stopped visa services at the Indian Visa Application Center (IVAC) in Chittagong, Bangladesh. This ‘tit for tat’ action taken by both sides has indicated that bilateral relations are currently going through a serious crisis.

Visa services of Bangladesh High Commission halted in New Delhi

Bangladesh High Commission in its official statement said that due to unavoidable circumstances, all consular and visa services of Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi have been temporarily suspended until further orders. He further wrote, ‘We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience caused by this.’ This decision has dealt a big blow to Bangladeshi citizens and visa applicants living in India.

India had earlier stopped visa services in Chittagong

On Sunday, India had indefinitely suspended visa services at the IVAC located in Bangladesh’s south-eastern port city of Chittagong. This decision was taken after the violence that broke out after the death of influential youth leader Osman Hadi. Usman Hadi was one of the prominent faces of the mass movement that took place last year, which ousted Sheikh Hasina from power. The statement issued by India said. ‘Due to the recent security incident in Chittagong, Indian Visa Operations (IVAC Chittagong) will remain suspended from 21/12/2025 till further orders.’

Warning of violence outside Indian embassies

According to sources, a large number of protesters had gathered outside the Assistant High Commission of India (AHCI) located in the second largest city of Bangladesh. The protesters even threatened “bloodshed” at the Indian Visa Center in Rajshahi. Some people also warned of taking up swords or weapons against the alleged injustice, after which the security agencies became alert.

Parliamentary committee called it a ‘strategic nightmare’

Meanwhile, the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs of the Parliament of India has issued a serious warning regarding the Bangladesh crisis. This committee, headed by Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, called it the biggest strategic crisis for India after the 1971 liberation war.

The report said that ‘the challenge of 1971 was existential – a humanitarian crisis and the birth of a new nation. Today’s threat is more subtle, but potentially more serious and profound. Gaps between generations, changes in the political system, and possible strategic realignment away from India.’

Concern over the increasing role of China and Pakistan

The committee has also expressed concern about the changing political equations in Bangladesh, generation gap and the increasing influence of China-Pakistan. In the report presented in the Parliament, it was said that this crisis may not be immediate but may have long-term and deep impact.

Increasing impact on common people, litmus test of relationships

The suspension of visa services is going to have a direct impact on business, treatment, education and family movement. These steps taken at the diplomatic level clearly indicate that India-Bangladesh relations are at a difficult juncture where every decision can decide the future direction.
