Which picture became the root of controversy?
The photo that was removed was of one of Epstein’s desk or credenza, which contained photos of many famous personalities. In one of these photos, Donald Trump is seen standing with some women, while in the other photo, Trump, Melania, Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell are seen together. The same document also contained photographs of former President Bill Clinton and Pope John Paul II.
Why did DoJ remove the photo?
According to the US Department of Justice, the Southern District of New York had marked this photo for review as potentially connected to the identities of the victims. On this basis, the photo was temporarily removed out of “extreme caution”.
There was an uproar on social media
As soon as the picture was removed, questions started being raised on social media and political circles. Critics alleged that selective deletions were being made from the Epstein files. Within no time this issue turned into a debate of transparency versus concealment, after which the pressure on DoJ to release the photo again increased.
Why did DoJ restore the photo?
After criticism, the DoJ clarified that its review found that the photo did not identify any Epstein victim. After this the photo was re-uploaded on the website without any changes or redactions. The department said that their aim is only to follow the law and not to save anyone.
Direct attack from Democrats
Democratic leaders attacked by linking this entire matter to Trump. Democrat MP Jamie Raskin alleged that releasing all documents related to Epstein was violating both the spirit and letter of the law. According to him, this is a case of “selective concealment”.
Republican MPs also angry
Interestingly, Republican MP Thomas Massie also joined the Democrats. He said that until Epstein’s victims are completely satisfied, he also will not be satisfied with the incomplete information. He also mentioned the charge sheet containing 60 charges, which has not been made public yet.
Victim protection or political shield?
In response to the allegations, Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche made it clear that the redaction being done in the files is only to protect the identities of the victims under the law. According to him, the name of any politician or influential person is not being removed intentionally.
Questions again on Trump-Epstein relationship
However, according to the initial review of the New York Times, Trump’s name appears very few places in the Epstein files. But it is also a fact that Trump and Epstein were socially close for years. The speculation had intensified due to Trump’s initial hesitation in making these files public. Now the return of the picture has once again brought this sensitive relationship at the center of debate.
