SIR: Election Commission will release draft voter list in MP, Chhattisgarh, Kerala and Andaman-Nicobar Islands today.

New Delhi, 23 DecemberThe Election Commission of India will on Tuesday release the draft voter list of voters of the more than one and a half month long Special Intensive Revision (SIR) campaign in Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Kerala and Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Official sources of the Chief Electoral Office of Madhya Pradesh said that initial assessment shows that the names of about 41,8 lakh voters in the state, i,e, about 7,2 percent of the voters, can be removed from the SIR,

According to official sources, preliminary data shows that out of 41.8 lakh names, 8.4 lakh voters were found dead, 8.4 lakh were found absent, 22.5 lakh had moved to other places and 2.5 lakh were registered at multiple addresses. In Bhopal, where there are 21.25 lakh registered voters, about 4.3 lakh names, or 20.23 per cent, may be removed from the draft voter list. While in Indore, 4.4 lakh names out of 28.67 lakh voters could be removed, in Gwalior 2.5 lakh names out of 16.49 lakh voters could be removed and in Jabalpur, 2.4 lakh names out of 19.25 lakh could be removed.

The official said that all these numbers are just an estimate and the exact number of removed voters will be known only after the final voter list is published by the Election Commission of India on Tuesday. More than 65,000 booth level officers were tasked with door-to-door visits for voter verification from November 4, while more than 6.65 crore voters were registered in Madhya Pradesh in 2023.

Madhya Pradesh has a total of 230 assembly seats and 29 Lok Sabha constituencies, spread over 55 districts, which are divided into 10 divisions namely Bhopal, Gwalior, Indore, Jabalpur, Chambal, Narmadapuram, Rewa, Sagar, Shahdol and Ujjain. Since November 4, when special intensive verification work began in the state, more than 65,000 booth-level officials have visited homes in cities, towns and villages to verify voter details.

What is special is that throughout the entire special intensive revision campaign, the main opposition Congress in Madhya Pradesh continued to oppose the steps of the Election Commission and criticized it by making political allegations. A delegation of state Congress workers met the Chief Electoral Officer in Bhopal and alleged irregularities in the SIR exercise.
