This scam is very dangerous and your one mistake can prove costly.
TRAI warned people
TRAI itself has warned the people about this scam happening in the name of TRAI. TRAI has posted a post on TRAI has appealed to the people to report such calls on Chakshu portal. When you receive such a call, do not press any of your numbers or click on any link sent by the scammers claiming that the digital arrest scam originates from this call.
Digital arrest scam is growing rapidly in India
According to government data, people of India have lost about Rs 120.3 crore in the ‘digital arrest’ scam between January and April 2024. Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself had given this information in the 115th episode of Mann Ki Baat on 27 October. He stressed on the increasing concerns regarding cyber crimes.
The National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (NCRP) has reported that around 7.4 lakh cyber crime complaints were received in the first quarter of 2024. A total of 15.56 lakh complaints were registered in 2023, which is significantly more than 9.66 lakh complaints in 2022 and 4.52 lakh complaints in 2021.
What is the digital arrest scam?
Digital arrest scam is a new and advanced scam. It usually begins with a phone call threatening to implicate the person in a crime related to illegal trade or corruption. Fraudsters connect with victims through video calls by posing as police officers and demand money to save themselves from arrest or legal action and people transfer money out of fear. To transfer money, these scammers ask people to be on a continuous video call.
