Foreign Minister Jaishankar’s visit to Sri Lanka, important conversation with top leadership!
India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar will visit Sri Lanka on Tuesday as a special envoy of Prime Minister Narendra Modi amid ongoing relief operations after the massive devastation caused by Cyclone Ditvaah. In Sri Lanka, MEA Jaishankar will hold talks with the top leadership there.
The Ministry of External Affairs said, “The visit reflects India’s Neighbor First policy and is taking place in the context of ‘Operation Sagar Bandhu’ launched to deal with the devastation caused by Cyclone Ditvah.
India started ‘Operation Sagar Bandhu’ on 28 November. The operation was launched to provide immediate humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) support to Sri Lanka as a first responder in the immediate aftermath of the deadly cyclone.
Earlier, India delivered relief goods to different areas of Sri Lanka affected by floods. On 18 December, India’s High Commissioner to Sri Lanka, Santosh Jha, visited the Kolonnawa area of Colombo and the Bhaktivedanta Children’s Home ‘Gokulam’ in Wattala. There was huge devastation in these areas due to the storm.
To provide assistance to Sri Lanka, the High Commissioner, in collaboration with the All Ceylon Sufi Spiritual Association, distributed help kits among families in Kolonnawa and children in ‘Gokulam’ at the ISKCON temple in Colombo.
Earlier, on December 14, a C-17 Globemaster aircraft of the Indian Air Force reached Sri Lanka. Through this, 10 tonnes of medicines and 15 tonnes of dry ration were delivered to the people of Sri Lanka. Additionally, the Indian Army worked to provide health care to the people on the ground and helped in quickly restoring communication links that had been lost.
Apart from this, the movement which was disrupted through roads and bridges was also rectified.
“Efforts to restore essential road connectivity are progressing steadily. Preparations are underway at bridge sites in Chilaw and Kilinochchi, the dilapidated Kilinochchi Bridge has been completely cleared and the Bailey Bridge is ready for installation, which will ease mobility and improve access to the area,” the Indian High Commission in Sri Lanka said in a statement.
