The entire mathematics of Rajya Sabha will change in 2026! Great war on 75 seats, in whose favor is the numbers game of NDA vs INDIA?

New Delhi: The coming year 2026 is going to prove to be very important from the point of view of Indian politics. While on one hand the political atmosphere will remain heated due to assembly elections in many big states, on the other hand big changes can also be seen in the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Parliament. Next year, elections are to be held on about 75 Rajya Sabha seats, due to which the strategies of both the ruling party and the opposition may reach a decisive turn.

These Rajya Sabha seats will be vacant in a phased manner in April, June and November. After this it will be clear which way the balance of power leans between the NDA and the India alliance in the Upper House. Besides, the assembly elections to be held in different states will also directly affect the mathematics of Rajya Sabha.

Rajya Sabha seats will be vacant from many states

In 2026, five Rajya Sabha seats from Bihar and 10 from Uttar Pradesh are going to become vacant. Apart from this, the tenure of members from Maharashtra, Jharkhand, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu and many north-eastern states will also be completed. Elections on these seats are possible between April to June and again in November.

Tenure of veteran leaders will end

The importance of Rajya Sabha elections 2026 also increases because during this period the tenure of many big political faces is ending. These include Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda, Digvijay Singh, Sharad Pawar and Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri. Apart from these, the tenure of BL Verma, Ravneet Singh Bittu and George Kurien is also about to end. At present it is not clear how many of these leaders will return to the House and how many new faces will get a chance in their place.

All eyes will be on Bihar and Uttar Pradesh

All five Rajya Sabha seats of Bihar will become vacant in April. These include RJD’s Prem Chand Gupta and Amarendra Dhari Singh, JDU’s Harivansh Narayan Singh, Union Minister Ramnath Thakur and Upendra Kushwaha’s tenure is ending.

After the strong victory of NDA in the recent assembly elections, it is believed that BJP and JDU can capture two seats each. There is also a possibility of return of some leaders including Upendra Kushwaha. Elections are to be held on 10 seats in Uttar Pradesh in November, which can decisively change the equation of Rajya Sabha.

Important contest in other states including Maharashtra

Elections for seven Rajya Sabha seats of Maharashtra are likely to be held in April. Among them, the tenure of Sharad Pawar, Priyanka Chaturvedi and Union Minister Ramdas Athawale is completing. Apart from this, many Rajya Sabha seats will also be vacant from Madhya Pradesh, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh.

Current power equation in Rajya Sabha

At present, NDA has 129 MPs in Rajya Sabha, while opposition parties have 78 seats. The elections to be held in 2026 may change this balance or further strengthen the position of the ruling party. Besides, the results of the assembly elections will also play an important role in deciding the strategy of political parties.
