Vinod Kumar Shukla Passes Away: Renowned litterateur Vinod Kumar Shukla, honored with the Jnanpith Award, passed away on Tuesday. He was admitted in AIIMS for a few days. 89-year-old Shukla’s health was critical and he breathed his last at AIIMS.
According to AIIMS management, Shukla was admitted to the hospital since December 2. He had severe respiratory disease and was also suffering from interstitial lung disease (IAD). Apart from this, he also had the problem of severe pneumonia. Shukla also had other health problems like type-2 diabetes and high blood pressure.
Vinod Kumar Shukla was born on 1 January 1937 in Rajnandgaon district of Chhattisgarh. He adopted education as a profession, but devoted most of his time to literary creation. He was a writer of Hindi language and literature, who is known for simple language, deep sensitivity and creative writing.
He was awarded the 59th Jnanpith Award in the year 2024 for his unique contribution, distinctive style and creativity in Hindi literature. Vinod Kumar Shukla is the 12th Hindi litterateur to receive this honour, and the first writer from the state of Chhattisgarh to be awarded the Jnanpith Award. Recently, Chief Minister Vishnudev Sai had reached AIIMS to inquire about his well being.
Writer, poet and novelist Vinod Kumar Shukla made significant contributions in both the genres of novels and poetry. His first poem ‘Almost Jaihind’ was published in 1971. His major novels include ‘Naukar Ki Kameez’, ‘Deewar Mein Ek Khirki Rahti Thi’ and ‘Khilega To Dekhen’.
Filmmaker Manikaul also made a film with the same name based on the novel ‘Naukar Ki Kameez’ published in 1979. His novel ‘Deewar Mein Ek Khirki Rahti Thi’ has also received the Sahitya Akademi Award. Shukla’s writings were known for simple language, deep sensitivity and unique style. He established new dimensions of experimental writing in Hindi literature.
Contribution to Indian and global literature
Vinod Kumar Shukla was not only a poet but also a talented storyteller. His novels shaped the direction of the original Indian novel in Hindi. He created a new narrative structure incorporating folk narratives and the complex aspirations of modern man. The subtle nuances of middle class life were depicted brilliantly in his novels. His distinctive linguistic style, sensitive depth and creativity enriched Indian and global literature.
