How does Google’s ELS service work?

Google has enabled ELS feature for Android smartphones. It has a built-in emergency service that allows users to call emergency services like police, medical staff and fire department. Google says the ELS service collects data from an Android phone’s GPS, Wi-Fi and cellular network so that the user’s location can be shared with emergency services.

ELS service requires supporting local wireless and emergency infrastructure. Uttar Pradesh is the first state in India to fully implement this service. For this purpose, UP Police has partnered with Pert Telecom Solutions. ELS support is also integrated with the emergency number 112. This is a free service. By dialing 112, your Android phone will provide the user’s location to emergency services.

Google said that the ELS feature is available for Android 6.0 and above. The company claims that the ELS service has received 20 million calls and messages so far. ELS is powered by Google’s machine learning-based Android Fused Location Provider. Google says that this feature is only for emergency service providers. ELS and Google do not collect any data. They only share necessary data with the appropriate authorities.

Emergency Live Video Feature
Google recently launched the Emergency Live Video feature for Android devices. This feature allows users to share their camera feed while making a call or sending an SMS during an emergency. However, the emergency service provider will have to request video from the user. Once the responder requests a video, the user will receive a prompt on the screen. Visual feed can be received with a single tap.
