Calcutta High Court Rejects Plea for Central Agency Probe into Messi Event Chaos:

The Calcutta High Court recently dismissed a plea seeking the transfer of the investigation into the disorderly conduct at the Lionel Messi event to the Central Bureau of Investigation.During the hearing held by the Division Bench comprising Acting Chief Justice Sujoy Paul and Justice Partha Sarathi Sen the court observed that the current inquiry led by the Special Investigation Team of the West Bengal Police was still in its preliminary stages. The bench noted that extraordinary directions to transfer a probe to a central agency are warranted only in rare instances where it can be established with precision that the ongoing local investigation is flawed or compromised The judges found that no material evidence had been presented to demonstrate that the inquiry was vitiated or polluted at this juncture and thus refused to grant any interim relief or stay the proceedings.

The legal matters arose after multiple Public Interest Litigations were filed demanding a central probe and ticket refunds following the chaos that erupted at the Salt Lake Stadium Fans had paid substantial amounts to witness the Argentine football legend but were reportedly left frustrated due to severe mismanagement and blocked views which led to vandalism and disorder within the premises. The petitioners argued that a court-monitored or central agency investigation was necessary to ensure impartiality particularly citing the alleged involvement of influential figures. However the state government counsel defended the actions taken so far stating that the event organizer Satadru Dutta had already been arrested and a show-cause notice had been issued to the Director General of Police The court emphasized that an investigation cannot be transferred merely upon request or based on allegations without substantial proof of bias. Consequently the bench directed the state government and the organizers to file affidavits addressing the contentions raised in the petitions within four weeks while listing the matter for further hearing in February
