Former South Korean President rejects drone allegations, cites phone call with Trump

South Korea News In Hindi: Former South Korean President Yun Suk Yeol denied all allegations related to sending drones to North Korea during his appearance in a Seoul court on Tuesday. Yun is accused of trying to provoke North Korea to justify the imposition of martial law on December 3 last year. In this alleged provocation, it was claimed that drones were sent to Pyongyang.

In this closed-door hearing, the court is considering extending Yun’s detention period or releasing him. Yoon is currently in custody on charges of obstruction of justice. He was arrested in January and is due to complete his current six-month detention period on January 18, according to Yonhap News Agency.

No information about attack

During the hearing, Yoon said he had no knowledge of any drone operation or attack. He said in clear words that no such military action is possible without his knowledge. Yun also claimed that the accusation against him of helping the enemy is completely baseless.

Reference to phone call from Trump

In his defense, Yoon cited a phone conversation he had with former US President Donald Trump. He told that after the US presidential elections in November, there was a phone conversation between the two leaders for about 10 minutes. In this conversation, the issue of North Korea sending balloons carrying garbage to South Korea was raised.

According to Yoon, he told Trump that his government was pursuing a policy of “strategic patience” in the face of North Korea’s provocations. He had also made it clear that as long as any action by North Korea does not cause loss of life or property, his government will avoid any aggressive step.

Demanded to extend the detention period

In this case, the team of Special Counsel Cho Eun-suk has demanded to extend Yoon’s detention period. Prosecutors claim the alleged drone campaign was aimed at provoking North Korea and creating an environment for imposing martial law. The team argued that the allegations against Yoon were serious and it was necessary to keep him in custody.

Hearing on charges in separate case

Yoon’s legal team said the drone-related charges should be heard in a separate trial and are not directly related to the ongoing detention case. On the other hand, the Special Counsel warned the court that Yoon still had political influence and in case of his release, he could put pressure on his alleged associates which could affect the trial.

Decision on extension of custody

The court has asked both sides to present additional arguments in writing by next Tuesday. Only after this the decision on extending the custody will be given. If the court allows extension of the custody, Yoon may have to remain in jail for six more months. Furthermore, the verdict on the charge of obstructing the judicial process is to be pronounced on January 16. A separate trial is also ongoing against Yoon on charges of leading a rebellion by imposing martial law.
