Desk: Police has made a big revelation regarding the case of theft in the famous Thave Durga temple of Gopalganj. The police has arrested the mastermind who carried out this theft incident. Many ornaments and donation papers, including a crown, donated by a Jharkhand businessman to the temple, were stolen in the dark of night. The accused arrested by the police is Deepak Kumar, son of Devanand Rai, a resident of Zamania in Ghazipur district of UP.

After this major theft incident, Gopalganj SP Awadhesh Dixit had formed a 12-member special investigation team. The team conducted raids in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh for five days. Police arrested Deepak Kumar on the basis of CCTV footage and mobile surveillance. At the behest of the accused, they recovered rod cutter, clothes worn at the time of theft, mobile phone (in which complete search history of Thawe Temple was found), bag (in which stolen jewelery was kept). Investigation of the mobile phone also revealed that even after the theft, the accused had searched about the quality of the gold.

Police said that according to the priest of the temple, thieves had stolen a gold-silver crown, precious necklace and other jewelery worth Rs 51 lakh from the idol of Maa Durga from the temple. The donation box was also targeted. The value of the stolen goods was said to be crores of rupees. The SP said that Deepak himself had come to Thawe temple on the night of 10th and 11th December and done Reiki. He decided where to enter the temple, how to reach the sanctum sanctorum and what would be the safe way out after the theft. A complete strategy was prepared.

Came out of Ghazipur after stealing: After this he tied a rope to the locker and pulled it upwards. After this, he came out of the temple with the help of rope and ladder and broke the locker and took out the crown. After reaching his bike, he went to Siwan via Paithan Patti. From where he left for his home in Ghazipur.
The accused is studying LLB: SP said that the accused was a basketball player. His father is a retired army soldier. The elder among the two brothers is a student of LLB. SP said that he is a habitual criminal. Five theft cases have been registered.
Has gone to jail in theft case: He has been involved in many temple theft incidents in the past also. In March 2025, he had committed theft in Sheetla Mata temple located in Kotwali police station area of Mau district of UP. He went to jail in this case and came out of jail on 13 November 2025.
Used to trap the young man in the name of getting him a job: According to the SP, since BJP leader and Jammu and Kashmir Governor Manoj Sinha was a resident of the village, he used to involve some boys in theft incidents by luring them with the promise of getting them jobs. Told that when the police reached his house and gave information, the villagers came to know about it. His family has been isolated from the society.
