Punjab News: The Animal Husbandry Department of Punjab has recorded achievements in various fields during the current year as well as exemplary work in protecting the livestock of the state during floods.

Punjab Animal Husbandry, Dairy Development and Fisheries Minister Gurmeet Singh Khuddian said that prompt and active role was played to save livestock in 12 flood affected districts of the state. He said 492 rapid-response veterinary teams were deployed in 713 affected villages. Additionally, a 24-hour emergency grid was established and free medical treatment was provided to more than 3.19 lakh animals.

“Our teams worked tirelessly on the ground to not only treat but also prevent the spread of diseases to ensure the safety of livestock, the backbone of our rural economy,” he said.

Minister Khuddiyan said that efforts to reduce the impact of floods included both treatment and prevention. Free booster dose was given to more than 2.53 lakh livestock to prevent the disease of Galghotu in animals. Apart from this, the department, in coordination with the district administration and non-governmental organizations, made important arrangements for the animals, in which more than 20,000 quintals of feed, more than 16,000 quintals of silage, thousands of quintals of fodder and straw, 234 quintals of mineral mixture, more than 68 thousand doses of dewormer and 194 kg of potassium permanganate were provided. Apart from this, 1,619 awareness camps were also organized to guide the cattle rearers during the disaster.

Highlighting the progress of the department apart from flood relief, Minister Gurmeet Singh Khuddian said that 22 modern animal lifters were purchased for the polyclinics of the state. Apart from this, six polyclinics located in Gurdaspur, Patiala, Ludhiana, Sangrur, Sri Muktsar Sahib and Amritsar have been appointed as new IPDs for better animal care. Upgraded from.

He said a strong preventive health shield was established across Punjab, with officials reporting administration of 24.27 lakh free doses against lumpy skin disease, 126.22 lakh doses against foot and mouth disease and 68.88 lakh doses against mumps.

Minister Khuddiyan said that Elangor-800 M.A. will be set up in Patiala Veterinary Polyclinic at a cost of Rs 54 lakh. Digital radiography system has been installed which will enable X-ray film free diagnosis of health related problems of animals. The system is capable of instantly detecting any type of fracture, bone cancer and internal conditions like foreign body entering the body, kidney stones and urinary blockages and after detection provides instant images on the monitor about the related health problem. Such a facility was earlier available only in the Veterinary University, Ludhiana and this advanced facility will prove to be a boon for the animal farmers of the state.

He said that 1.82 lakh doses of sex sorted semen was used by the department between January 2023 and March 2025 to improve the breed of animals and increase the profits of farmers, which has increased the birth rate of high-value heifers and heifers.

Highlighting the progress of the fisheries sector, Minister Khuddiyan said that the department provided subsidy of Rs 5.82 crore to 187 beneficiaries for fisheries projects during the financial year 2024-25. More than 2 lakh tonnes of fish was produced from 43,683 acres of area under fish culture in the state, while 2,550 tonnes of fish was produced from 985 acres under prawn culture during the current year. The government produced 15.99 crore fish ponds and trained more than 9,200 people in fish farming techniques.

During this, while explaining about the progress of dairy sector, Minister Gurmeet Singh Khuddian said that about 8,500 farmers are trained annually to provide dairy skills to the rural youth, due to which about 3,500 dairy units are established annually. Under the National Livestock Mission, 30,734 milch animals were insured and an assistance of Rs 9 crore was given to the farmers affected by the loss of animals.
