Farmers’ Day 2025: As India is an agricultural country, crores of citizens of India are engaged in agriculture and agro-related businesses, thus strengthening the country’s economy. National Farmers Day is celebrated on 23rd December every year to honor this contribution of farmers. On this occasion, let us understand about 5 major government schemes for farmers.
1. Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Fund (PM-KISAN)
Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi is one of the most popular farmer schemes in the country. Under this scheme, eligible farmers are given a financial assistance of Rs 6,000 per year. This amount is directly transferred to their bank account in three equal installments of Rs 2,000 each. So far 21 installments of the scheme have been released and farmers are waiting for the 22nd installment.
2. Pradhan Mantri Dhan Dhan Krishi Yojana
The government has launched an important initiative called Pradhan Mantri Dhan Dhan Krishi Yojana. It aims to focus on areas where agriculture has not yet become profitable. The scheme will address issues related to cost of agriculture, irrigation, storage and reduction of resources. A long term strategy has been developed to increase the income of farmers. The scheme will be implemented for six years from 2025-26. In the first phase, 100 backward districts have been selected. An estimated Rs 24,000 crore will be spent annually and an estimated 1.7 crore farmers are expected to benefit.

3. Kisan Credit Card (KCC)
Timely availability of funds is a major challenge in agriculture. To address this issue, the Kisan Credit Card (KCC) scheme is being implemented. It provides loans at low interest rates, which can be used for agriculture, animal husbandry and horticulture. Government subsidies on interest rates are also available. Now, KCC has been integrated into PM Kisan Yojana, which has simplified the application process. Farmers can apply through their bank or through the nearest CSC center.
4. Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY)
Farmers are the most affected by the weather. Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana is being implemented to protect them from loss in case of crop failure. Under this scheme, crop insurance is offered at a very low premium. In case of damage due to natural calamities, pests or weather, farmers get compensation, which is directly transferred to their accounts. This scheme provides financial security to the farmers.
5. Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchai Yojana
Agriculture is impossible without water. The Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchai Yojana aims to provide water to every farm. Under the scheme, subsidies are provided for modern technologies like drip irrigation and frost irrigation, which result in higher production with less water and lower irrigation costs. In many cases, the government provides subsidies of up to 50 percent, making it easier to adopt modern irrigation systems.

Why is National Farmers Day celebrated?
National Farmers Day was started in 2001. The then central government decided to celebrate 23rd December, the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Charan Singh Chaudhary, as Farmers’ Day. At that time the NDA government was in power and Atal Bihari Vajpayee was the Prime Minister. The main objective of this day is to recognize the contribution of farmers at the national level, create awareness about their rights and take necessary steps to improve the agricultural sector. On National Farmers Day, farmers are informed about new agricultural techniques, government schemes and sustainable agriculture, so that they can farm more profitably and improve their lifestyle.
