Name of candidate withdrawn from Ballygunge seat

Janata Unnayan Party (JUP) founder Humayun Kabir on Tuesday removed Nisha Chatterjee, the declared candidate from Ballygunge seat for the West Bengal Assembly elections 2026. Kabir said that the content on Chatterjee’s social media does not match the party’s image and may spread a wrong message among the public.

Giving clarity on his decision, Kabir said that he saw Chatterjee’s pictures and videos, after which he had to take this decision. He said, “It is within my right to take this decision.” Kabir also informed that the name of a new female candidate for the Ballygunge seat will be announced soon, who may possibly be from the Muslim community.

allegations based on religion

At the same time, Nisha Chatterjee has made serious allegations linking this decision to religion. He said that his withdrawal happened only because he is a Hindu. Chatterjee said, “Humayun Kabir himself had asked me to become an election candidate, but now questions are being raised on me.”

Social embarrassment and possibility of legal action

Chatterjee expressed his disappointment at being treated this way even though he was in support of Kabir’s Babri Masjid plan. “I am feeling socially embarrassed by this incident. I am considering legal action,” she said.

Kabir’s suspension and controversy

Humayun Kabir, who is the MLA from Bharatpur, was suspended by the TMC on December 4. This action was taken due to his statement of building a mosque on the lines of Babri Masjid, which created a major controversy in the politics of the state. Kabir had laid the foundation stone of the proposed mosque in Murshidabad on December 6, the anniversary of the demolition of the Babri Masjid in 1992. This decision has created a new stir in the politics of West Bengal amid preparations for the upcoming assembly elections.
