Seriously injured Hadi was taken to Singapore for treatment, but he died on 18 December. Brother’s open announcement at the funeral: “If you cannot give justice, you will have to run away”
A huge crowd gathered in the central area of Dhaka during Hadi’s funeral. Meanwhile, his elder brother Abu Bakar gave a very sharp and emotional speech from the stage. He directly warned the interim government and its chief Mohammad Yunus, saying, “If you cannot give justice, you will have to leave the country.” Abu Bakr blamed the people in power for his brother’s murder and said that the government was trying to hide the truth. He raised the question, “You killed Osman Hadi and now you want to cancel the elections by showing him?”
“If Hadi does not get justice, you will also have to go”
In his address, Abu Bakar said in clear words that if Hadi does not get justice, then the people of the country will not accept this government either. He said, “If Hadi does not get justice, you too will have to leave this country.” After this statement, the people present in the crowd raised loud slogans – “Hadi’s blood will not go in vain” and “Hadi never bowed down”.
Thousands of people gathered amidst heavy security
Tens of thousands of people attended Hadi’s funeral. Considering the seriousness of the situation, heavy security forces were deployed in the entire area. Nevertheless, tension remained at many places between the angry crowd and the security forces. Protesters say that Hadi’s assassination is part of a political conspiracy and its purpose is to crush emerging young voices before the elections.
Hadi emerged from the July 2024 movement
Sharif Usman Hadi was recognized at the national level during the July 2024 mass movement, which played a major role in removing the then Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina from power. Hadi was counted among the most vocal and fearless voices of that movement. This was the reason why he was being seen as a strong potential leader in the parliamentary elections to be held in February. Many analysts are considering his murder as an attempt to change the electoral equation.
Increasing pressure on government, questions on investigation
In his speech, Abu Bakr demanded that “all those involved in the murder of Hadi be brought forward and punished.” At present, the government has given assurance of investigation, but the protesters and Hadi’s supporters on the streets are calling it an empty assurance. Opposition parties have also indicated to raise this matter on international forums.
Crisis looming on the future of Bangladesh
