Good news for Delhiites: GRAP-4 removed from Delhi-NCR, decision taken after improvement in AQI.

A good news has come for the people of Delhi-NCR before Christmas. The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has lifted the stringent restrictions of GRAP-4 with immediate effect. This decision has been taken in view of the improvement in the air of Delhi. However, now is not the time to completely celebrate. The Commission has made it clear that the rules of Stage-1, 2 and 3 of Grapes will still be strictly enforced. That means the danger has reduced but has not been averted.

Why was this big decision taken after the improvement in air quality?

The sub-committee on GRAP held an important meeting today. In this, the forecasts of Meteorological Department (IMD) and IITM were reviewed. The committee found that the pollution level has come down due to strong winds in the last few days.

As soon as the wind speed decreases, the problem may increase again.

Even though AQI is still below 300. But the Meteorological Department has warned that the wind speed may reduce in the coming days. Due to this the pollution level may increase again. This is the reason why the Commission has not taken the risk of removing Stage-1, 2 and 3. According to the instructions of the Supreme Court, these steps will be applicable in the entire NCR. Its aim is to ensure that the air quality does not reach the ‘severe’ category again.

Administration is strict, appeals to people to follow the rules

The Commission has directed all concerned agencies to implement the measures up to Stage-3 more strictly. Any kind of negligence will not be tolerated in this. Along with this, an appeal has also been made to common citizens. It is winter season, hence pollution accumulates quickly. Therefore people should follow the Citizen Charter of Grapes. This includes not burning garbage in the open, using public transport and preventing dust from flying.

Pollution in Delhi was recorded between severe levels (AQI 401-450), following which stage three was implemented in the entire NCR.
Stage 1: Poor (AQI 201-300)
Stage 2: Very poor (AQI 301-400)
Stage 3: Severe (AQI 401-450)
Stage 4: Severe Plus (AQI above 450)
With the removal of Stage 3, strict measures have been relaxed.
