The anticipation around the Vijay Hazare Trophy, which is India’s premier List-A domestic tournament, has never been as high as it is for the 2025/26 edition. The reason for that is two names: Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma.
The two former India captains are set to return to domestic cricket as they look for more playing time now that they only play in one international format.
Their participation in the Vijay Hazare Trophy could also be a forced one after BCCI’s policies from earlier in the year made it mandatory for centrally contracted players to make themselves available for domestic matches when they are not playing international cricket.
Will Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma play in Vijay Hazare Trophy?
Yes, both Rohit and Kohli will take part in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, which will begin on December 24. Both have been named in their respective team’s squads for the first two matches, and their participation could be extended.
The Shardul Thakur-led Mumbai, which includes Rohit, will take on Sikkim on December 24 and then face Uttarakhand on December 26, with both matches to be played in Jaipur.
Delhi will be captained by Rishabh Pant. Kohli will feature in Delhi’s matches against Andhra on December 24 and against Gujarat on December 26. These games will be played at BCCI’s Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru behind closed doors—meaning that no spectators are allowed, as ordered by the Karnataka government.
Delhi’s first two matches were originally scheduled to be played at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. However, Justice John Michael D’Cunha labeled the stadium “highly unsafe” for large gatherings as the stadium continues to suffer the aftereffects of the stampede during RCB’s victory parade after winning the IPL trophy, during which 11 people died.
Apart from Rohit and Kohli, some other Indian stars who will be in action in this tournament are Suryakumar Yadav, Abhishek Sharma, Rishabh Pant, Ishan Kishan, and Hardik Pandya.
