No speed breaker, no shock: Red road will change the game of highway safety

India’s First Red Road: Country’s first red road built in Madhya Pradesh These days road safety and ADAS Technology remains a topic of discussion. As new and advanced technology cars are hitting the roads in India, the need to make the infrastructure smart is also being felt. Under this thinking, a unique experiment has been conducted in Madhya Pradesh, which can become an example for the entire country in the coming times.

Unique red road section built on NH-45

About 2 km long stretch passing through the forest on NH-45 in Madhya Pradesh has now been prepared with a special red colored road. This is the first road in India where table-top red thermoplastic marking has been used. The design aims to increase driver alertness, ensure the safety of wildlife, and take future ADAS technology into account.

This red road is not a speed breaker, it is a smart sign

This red road is not like any ordinary speed breaker or rumble strip. It is slightly raised and is clearly visible to the driver from a distance. The red color itself gives a warning signal, due to which the driver reduces the speed of the vehicle without applying brakes suddenly. This neither causes damage to the vehicle nor makes driving uncomfortable. Especially in forest areas, this technology can prove effective in reducing accidents caused by animals.

Is there a threat to ADAS systems?

This question is arising in the minds of many people whether a different colored road will confuse the ADAS system. On this, experts say that modern ADAS does not depend only on the color of the road. It takes data from lane lines, contrast, reflectivity and sensors like cameras, radar and LiDAR.

According to Abhishek Mohan, ADAS Chief Engineer, Tata Technologies, the road is safe for Level-2 and Level-3 ADAS systems, provided the white and yellow lane markings are clearly visible. ADAS guides the vehicle primarily based on these lane lines, while recognizing horizontal markings such as red as road surface, not lanes.

Indian initiative inspired by Dubai model

This red road is inspired by Dubai’s Sheikh Zayed Road, where accidents have been reduced by making colored roads in different areas. This experiment conducted in India shows that now roads are being designed not just for vehicles, but keeping in mind all three, humans, animals and the environment. According to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, this project is an important step towards environmental protection, road safety and protection of wildlife. Here the red road is not a symbol of danger, but of intelligent design.
