Alam made this comment in response to a reporter’s question during a press conference after the meeting of the advisory council of the interim government on Wednesday. The reporter had reportedly asked about a letter sent by US lawmakers to the Chief Advisor, expressing concern over the ban on the Awami League. He said that he has not seen that letter and has no information about it. However, he stressed that the government’s stand regarding the Awami League is clear. The Secretary said that since the activities of Awami League are banned and the Election Commission has canceled the registration of the party. Therefore Awami League will not be able to participate in this election. Earlier in May, the interim government had issued a gazette notification banning all activities of the Bangladesh Awami League and its affiliated, associated and fraternal organisations. The decision was said to remain in force until the completion of the trials at the International Criminal Tribunal. At that time this gazette was issued by the Public Security Division of the Home Ministry. It has been said in the notification that this action has been taken under the Anti-terrorism Ordinance.
