Is Indian stock market closed on December 25 for Christmas holiday? EXPLAINED

Thursday, December 25: Indian stock markets will remain closed for trading on Thursday, December 25, on account of Christmasas per the official holiday calendar of the exchanges.

Both the BSE and the National Stock Exchange (NSE) will be shut for the day, with trading set to resume on Friday, December 26, 2025. This is the only market holiday in December and also the final trading holiday of the year.

Alongside the equity markets, the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) will remain closed during the morning session. However, commodity trading on MCX will reopen in the evening session from 5:00 pm onwards.

Following this, the next stock market holiday will fall in 2026with markets scheduled to remain closed on January 26, 2026on account of Republic Day.

The holiday comes amid a muted market environment, with benchmark indices consolidating toward the year-end. The Sensex and Nifty have gained around 10% year-to-date in 2025while broader indices such as Nifty Midcap and Nifty Smallcap have underperformed.

Brokerage firm Motilal Oswal recently noted that Indian equities remain well positioned for a recovery, supported by improving earnings visibility and a favourable domestic macro backdrop. The brokerage highlighted that the Nifty is trading at 21.3x earningsclose to its long-term average, and expects mid-teens earnings growth in FY26 and FY27.
