News India Live, Digital Desk: The day of Christmas 2025, while people across the world were celebrating the festival, it brought a big disappointment for millions of people playing online games. The servers of the big gaming platform Steam suddenly stopped working, due to which crores of gamers from India to America were troubled for hours. This outage was heartbreaking news for those who had made full plans to play new games or compete online with their friends over the holidays. According to information from ‘Downdetector’, a website that monitors outages (service interruptions), there were severe problems with Steam’s services for hours on Christmas Day. During the peak period, approximately 14,000 US users and approximately 400 Indian users reported that they were having trouble running Steam. However, some reports suggest that more than 60,000 complaints have been filed. Gamers faced problems connecting to servers, logging into their accounts, and even purchasing games. In the United States, a majority of 78% of users complained about server connection issues, 15% were unable to make purchases, and 7% were unable to log in to Steam at all. Most of such complaints came from big cities on the East Coast of America like New York and Washington. At the same time, gamers in India were also affected; Here 88% of the users faced problem in connecting to the server, while 9% were not able to log in. This problem was also reported from many major cities of India including Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai and Chennai. Some users and reports also said that this did not seem like a normal maintenance downtime, because usually the maintenance is informed about in advance. An unofficial Steam status website reported ‘websocket errors’ and said that the Steam Store, its community page, and the web API (application programming interface) were all down. This sudden problem prevented gamers from playing their favorite games on this special holiday. In the initial hours, there was no official statement from ‘Valve’, the company running Steam. However, after several hours of effort, Steam services were gradually restored, which brought some relief to the gamers. This incident once again proved how important the strength of an online gaming platform and uninterrupted access to a large number of users is.
