PWD’s master plan to make Delhi dust-free; Department will develop 4 model roads

The Public Works Department (PWD) has taken a big step to control dust pollution in Delhi. The department will develop four model road stretches, including a part in South Delhi. These roads will be completely paved from one end to the other. Green strips and wide footpaths will be built on both sides, so that there is no bare soil anywhere and the problem of dust flying can be eliminated.

First 4 models, then all the big roads

PWD officials said the government has decided to continuously pave all major roads, so that no unpaved stretch is left. Under the long plan, all arterial roads including Ring Road and Outer Ring Road will be made dust-free. PWD Minister Pravesh Verma said that instructions have been given to prepare the first four model stretches. After the gram ban is lifted, these roads will be ready in about a month. At present, information about the exact location of these roads is not available.

After digging, work will be done in 7 days, will not dig for 2 years

The department has instructed field engineers to completely restore the road within seven days after cable, pipeline or other utility work. Short-term tenders will be issued to repair old excavated roads. After construction of new roads, they will not be dug up again for at least two years. All ducting work will be done keeping in mind the future needs, so that there is no need for frequent digging and the roads remain safe in the long run.

Trees and strict action on soil

Saplings will be planted in empty places, so that loose soil does not blow away in the wind and dust pollution is reduced. In case of digging of roads, many times utility agencies work without permission. Now strict action will be taken in such cases including registering FIR, so that violation of rules can be stopped and the roads remain safe.

Collaboration with MCD and identification of DDA roads

PWD will now work with MCD to recycle the construction waste and use it in new roads. Besides, the bad roads of DDA which spread dust are being identified and their detailed report is being prepared. This step is considered important towards reducing dust pollution in the capital and improving road infrastructure.
