Karti Chidambaram to face charges in Chinese visa scam case – Read

A Delhi court on Tuesday ordered that charges be formally framed against Congress MP Karti P. Chidambaram and six others in connection with the Chinese visa scam case, a key step that moves the matter closer to trial.

The special CBI court, presided over by Judge Dig Vinay Singh, found sufficient prima facie grounds to proceed against the accused on charges including criminal conspiracy linked to alleged bribery in visa approvals. One of the original eight accused, Chetan Shrivastava, was discharged from the case due to lack of evidence at this stage.

The case stems from a charge sheet filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in October 2024. The agency alleges that Chidambaram and others facilitated undue visa approvals for Chinese nationals working on a power project, in return for illegal gains. Prosecutors say the accused conspired to bypass limits on “project visas” and received a bribe of ₹50 lakh in the process.
