What we call ‘Christmas cake’ today actually originated as ‘Plum Porridge’ made from oatmeal and dried plums. In the medieval period, the Christmas festival lasted for a month from 6 December to 6 January, when people used to enjoy the festival during winter leisure. At that time there was a tradition of fasting during ‘Advent’ before Christmas, in which only light and simple food was eaten. As soon as the fast ended, the celebration started with ‘Plum Porridge’. To make it, dried plums, honey and various spices were used in barley or oat porridge.
This dish was not only very tasty, but was also considered a very good food that provides energy and warmth to the body in the harsh winter.

Plum porridge transformed
During the 16th century, there was a major change in the traditional porridge made from plum. Now eggs, flour, spices and butter were also added to it, due to which it gradually took the shape of cake. The Industrial Revolution of the 18th and 19th centuries completely changed the lifestyle of the people.
