Chaos in Jaipur’s Chaumun on Friday, internet shut down, stones pelted at police; Controversy over removal of stones from near the mosque – VIDEO
The situation suddenly deteriorated late on Friday night in Chaumun town of Jaipur district of Rajasthan, when a dispute related to a mosque took the form of communal tension. The situation became so serious that some anti-social elements pelted stones at the police force, in which many policemen were injured. To control the situation, the police had to release tear gas shells and resort to lathicharge.

After strict action and presence of senior officers, the situation was brought under control in about a few hours. However, as a precautionary measure, heavy police force has been deployed in the entire area and a temporary ban has been imposed on internet services.
Controversy started over stone removal
According to the information, the work of removing the stones lying for a long time on the roadside near the mosque premises was going on since Friday evening. These stones were obstructing traffic in the populated area, resulting in traffic jams every day. As soon as the stone removal process started, some local people started opposing it. During the protest, the crowd at the spot kept increasing and the atmosphere became tense.
Suddenly stones were pelted on police, many soldiers injured
Some anti-social elements present among the crowd suddenly started pelting heavy stones targeting the police force. The situation went out of control due to the sudden attack. To disperse the crowd, the police first released tear gas shells and then resorted to lathi charge. During this period many policemen were injured.
Clearing the situation on the matter, DCP West Jaipur Hanuman Prasad Meena said that there was a dispute going on in the area regarding encroachment for a long time. DCP Hanuman Prasad Meena said, “Here is the Kalandaria Mosque, where a dispute regarding encroachment was going on for a long time. One party had voluntarily removed the encroachment, but some people were trying to re-erect it permanently by installing iron angles. When the police was removing those structures, some people started pelting stones at the police.” He further said that “Strict action will be taken against all those involved in the incident. At present there is peace in the area and the situation is completely under control.”
Senior officers on the spot, took charge themselves
Seeing the seriousness of the situation, Special Operations Commissioner Rahul Prakash, Additional Police Commissioner Dr. Rajeev Pachar and Manish Aggarwal immediately reached the spot. Senior officers themselves took command and brought the situation under control along with the police force and restored peace in the area.
Bus stand became police camp
After the incident, as a precautionary measure, Chaumun bus stand and its surrounding areas have been completely converted into a police cantonment. Additional forces have been deployed in sensitive areas and constant monitoring is being done so that no untoward situation arises again.
24 hour ban on internet services
To maintain peace and law and order, the Divisional Commissioner has issued an order to temporarily shut down internet services in Chaumun area. According to the order, mobile internet and data services will remain closed from 7 am on December 26 to 7 am on December 27.
